In 1994, Ronaldo moved to Europe, following in the footsteps of fellow Brazilian Romário at PSV. In his first season, he scored 30 goals in 33 league matches and impressed internationally with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Cup. Despite a season-ending injury in 1995/96, Ronaldo still scored 12 goals in 13 league games, helping PSV win the KNVB Cup. After two successful years at PSV, Ronaldo was sold to FC Barcelona for a record 34 million “gulden” (approximately 15 million euros).
