The history:

Under the guidance of Guy Thys, Belgium reached the semifinals of the 1986 World Cup, but were defeated by Argentina and then lost to France in the third-place playoff, finishing fourth, their best result to date. In 1988 and 1989, Belgium topped their World Cup qualifying group, securing a spot in their eighth World Cup by defeating Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.

Lei Clijsters had a distinguished football career, playing for clubs like Club Brugge, KV Mechelen, and the Belgian national team, where he earned 40 caps and helped Belgium reach fourth place in the 1986 World Cup, while also winning the Gouden Schoen in 1988 before transitioning to coaching. Clijsters passed away in 2009.
